There is a persistent cultural preference for personal agency explanations over structural ones. When behavior is framed as a choice, it implies it could simply be chosen differently. That framing is more comfortable than the structural account, and it is considerably less accurate.
The structural account does not diminish agency. It relocates it. If your behavior is governed by systems operating largely outside conscious awareness, changing that behavior requires understanding and engaging those systems. That is harder than deciding to do better. It is also the only approach that produces durable results.
The resistance to structural explanations is itself a structural phenomenon. Identity investment in personal agency as the primary frame for understanding behavior makes structural analysis feel like an attack on self-determination. It is not. It is a more precise account of where self-determination actually operates and how it can be meaningfully exercised.
This is why the first task is not behavioral change. It is conceptual reorientation. Until someone can hold a structural view of their own behavior without experiencing it as a threat to their sense of agency, intervention at the level of structure is unlikely to land.
